Helping Children Enjoy Christmas: 5 Gentle Tips 🎄

Christmas is such a magical time of year, full of lights, music, and excitement, but it can also feel overwhelming for some children. For those who find the season a bit challenging, there are some ways we can help make it calmer, happier and more enjoyable.

Here are a few ideas to keep in mind:

1. Keep Some Routines

The festive period often brings changes to bedtime, mealtimes, and daily schedules. Even small touches of consistency—like a regular bedtime, a favourite snack, or a familiar morning routine—can give children a sense of security and help them feel more settled amid the holiday bustle.

2. Check In with Feelings

It’s easy to assume everyone is feeling festive, but some children may be anxious, tired, or missing someone special. Taking a few moments to gently ask how they’re feeling, and really listening, can make them feel understood and supported. Even short conversations can reassure them that it’s okay to have mixed emotions.

3. Focus on Moments, Not Perfection

Christmas can sometimes feel like a race of decorations, gifts, and events. Remind children (and ourselves!) that the magic is in the little moments, baking cookies together, making a homemade card, reading a story, or sharing a laugh. These simple joys are often what they remember most.

4. Create Quiet Corners

Festive music, parties, and visitors can be exciting but also a lot to process. Having a calm corner or quiet activity, whether it’s a cosy chair with a book or a small craft table, can help children take a break when they need it and return to the festivities feeling refreshed.

5. Include Them in Traditions

Let children take part in festive activities in ways that feel fun and manageable. Helping to decorate, wrap a gift, or choose a family activity gives them a sense of involvement and pride. Feeling included helps build confidence and strengthens the sense of togetherness that makes Christmas special.

Christmas doesn’t have to be perfect to be magical. Small gestures, understanding, and gentle support can make a big difference to how children experience the season. Wishing you and your family a calm, joyful and happy festive season.
